Spatial Analysis for Business 2008 Conference

You are invited to participate in the 2008 Spatial Analysis for Business Conference to be held at the University of Redlands April 5 through April 8, 2008.  We encourage you to submit research papers, new research ideas, symposia, plenary sessions, and panels/workshops.

The Spatial Analysis for Business 2008 conference is co-sponsored by the University of Redlands and the Small Business Administration. This innovative conference brings together businesses, noted experts in Geographical Information Systems (GIS), and researchers to create a unique learning opportunity.  The conference is open to anyone interested in GIS:  researchers, business professionals, students or others seeking to learn more about geographic information systems technology and network with other professionals proficient or interested in GIS.

Scholars and researchers: You will have the opportunity to share your research and teaching experiences with colleagues and learn from their experiences.  

Business owners and others interested in GIS: Learn how GIS technology can help enhance your organization through workshops, panels and presentations from researchers and practitioners.  

Keynote speakers and participants include: Jack Dangermond, President of ESRI; Susan Wachter, Wharton School, David Maguire, ESRI, Blake Murillo, CEO of Psomas, and Grant Thrall, University of Florida.

Tutorials include: Spatial analysis in marketing, Spatial analysis in operations management, Serving your organization’s spatial data on the web, Business Analyst in the firm.

We invite you to submit papers that relate to spatial analysis research that focus on businesses, organizations, and industry. A broad range of papers will be considered – including applications of spatial analysis in business, research on the environment of business such as economic analysis tools, demographic tools, the spatial web and mobile services, industry level analysis case studies, and community development tools.  Papers relating to the use of spatial analysis in small business are particularly welcome.  The conference also welcomes presentations on innovative curriculum design in teaching spatial analysis for business, teaching cases, and pedagogical approaches.

Best Student Paper Award: Papers where ALL co-authors are Doctoral/Masters students will be considered for the ‘Best Student Paper’ award.

Proceedings: All accepted manuscripts will be published in the Conference Proceedings

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  • All submissions must be made online at www.spatialconference.org no later than December 8, 2007 December 17, 2007.
  • Papers should not have been previously accepted, published, presented, or be under review for another meeting or journal. Subsequent publication, with proper acknowledgement, is encouraged.
  • If a paper or case study is accepted, at least one author (for other formats, every author) must attend the conference and present their work
  • The maximum length of all submissions is 25 pages including title pages, figures, references and appendices
  • Papers should use the APA style for citations.
  • Manuscripts should be double spaced with 1 inch margins on all four sides.  The page setup should be for standard U.S. Letter size (8.5 x 11 inches).  Manuscripts should be prepared in Times New Roman font, size 12.
  • The entire paper must be in a single document created in Microsoft Word.
  • Paper submissions will be blind reviewed; thus, no author names or other identifying information should appear anywhere in the manuscript (not even on the title page).  This does not apply to symposia, workshops, panel discussions or other formats which are not blind reviewed.

SUBMISSION TYPES

  • Theoretical and empirical papers – Papers can take the form of in a traditional presentation format (about 20 minutes to present the paper to an audience followed by a discussion period), or a roundtable/research-in-progress format (all authors assigned to a particular sessions read each other’s work and come prepared to discuss the manuscripts with the goal of improving the conference manuscript for future journal publication). For accepted papers, program chairs will make the determination as to which papers seem appropriate for regular or roundtable sessions. In the submission process, authors have the option of expressing a preference for one of the formats.  We will do our best to accommodate your requests.
  • Symposia: The body of the symposium proposal should include a 3-5 page summary of the symposium session and proposed format of the symposium and a 2-3 page description of each speaker’s topic, along with speaker backgrounds. If accepted, the contact presenter should provide the program chair agreements of participation from each participant.
  • Panels, workshops and other innovative sessions: Innovative sessions are encouraged. These submissions should provide a description of the target audience, proposed session content and format, and a clear description of how the session will add value for the target audience.
